Our client's Generation & Renewables business owns and operates one of the largest and most diverse portfolios of power generating plants in the UK, including large gas, coal and oil-fired power stations, cogeneration plants and renewable facilities. Their portfolio of nine fossil fuel-fired power stations, 16 onshore wind farms, one offshore wind farm, 15 hydro schemes and 16 combined heat and power plants has a combined generation capacity of over 10,000MW.
Main Purpose of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of cost effective, timely and appropriate technical recommendations and advice to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of steam raising plant used in the power industry.
The plant areas under consideration include:
-The pressure parts and structures associated with conventional drum and supercritical boiler plant, and heat recovery steam generators.
-Ancillary plant items such as pumps, valves (including boiler stop and safety) desuperheaters, boiler integral and drains pipework systems, airheaters, fans and heat exchangers.
-High temperature and high pressure pipework systems.
The role covers the life cycle of steam raising plant, and requires, for the plant areas identified above:
-The preparation and review of boiler plant specifications at the design and procurement stage.
-The investigation of operational and maintenance problems and the recommendations for solutions to customer requirements.
-The engineering design, to code requirements, and risk assessments associated with plant modifications, to secure and enhance operational reliability and efficiency.
-The provision of detailed plant inspection recommendations to be carried out during main outages, to ensure plant safety and to secure compliance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations.
Knowledge and Skills
You will possess a comprehensive knowledge of the following topics:
-Extensive practical and theoretical knowledge in the mechanical engineering discipline and with skills and experience at Chartered Engineer level.
-Good knowledge of, and experience in the application of boiler, piping, and pressure vessel design codes (British, European, US etc.) to the design and procurement of utility steam raising plant, pipework systems, as well as the ancillary plant areas identified above.
-Good understanding of the principles of boiler circulation and heat transfer, knowledge of steels used in the power industry, and of degradation mechanisms such as creep, fatigue and corrosion.
-To be able to fulfil the technical advice role, the successful candidate should also have had practical experience, for example, construction, operational or maintenance associated with steam raising plant.
-IT skills to carry out engineering analysis appropriate to the job, particularly analysis of plant data using spreadsheets and use of design codes.
-Strong analytical/problem solving skills & will need to be a good team player with good organisational and inter-personal skills,they will need to work across departments and at all levels within the Company.
The role requires site work and so the successful candidate should have a full driving licence & be prepared to travel within the UK and occasional trips abroad.
